Verify that your old cartridge can be removed first.  Take your time heat is your friend when removing the retaining bolts on the hot side of the turbo.
 
Despite what others say on the popular TDI forums, this can be accomplished in your garage . However, perform this at your own risk.  When installed properly these CHRA's can last upwards of 200,000 miles. Save yourself some $$ and replace the faulty cartridge.
